Internet Cultures - Brief Explanation + Introduction on Topic 3

Brief Explanation and Introduction on the Internet:

Topic 3: How did mobile devices change the way people use the internet? Consider its consumer impact and relate them to a specific creative industry/profession.

Before embarking further on the chosen topic, allow me to explain the importance to have a good comprehension and understanding of the chosen topic which is "Internet". What is Internet? According to Google, an internet is the global system of interconnected computer networks that use the internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link devices across the globe.

Before I pursue further in depth with the question at hand, let's go way back in the beginning era of 1990's when the regime of internet usage has changed from the past 25 years ago, when there weren't any smartphones or even internet accessibility and since then a lot of things have changed. Now we could not even remember when was the last time we actually use our smartphones for a whole day with either packet data or WIFI. Mobile smart devices and mobile internet are changing the way we do things and how we connect with other people.

Currently, with the internet everything are much easier than ever in terms of accessibility and networking compared to back then, where so much information can be disseminated from the internet because it provides all sort of information and contemporary issues/news. It has made the internet a very important and recognized tool globally since it has provided the world with so much information and entertainment thus making it easier for the consumers to obtain information. Therefore, internet is one of the most unique and recognized inventions globally because it has eased the work both physically and psychologically.

To recapitulate, the internet coupled with the use mobile apps compared back then and now have completely changed the way the consumers live, work and learn and it has made the world grow in a right direction in terms of cultural, social, political and economical spectrums.

Internet Cultures - Research + Understandings

Topic 3: How did mobile devices change the way people use the internet? Consider its consumer impact and relate them to a specific creative industry/profession.

What is internet? According to Google, an internet is the global system of interconnected computer networks that use the internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link devices worldwide. Whereas the term mobile devices refers to a wide range of consumer electronics. Mobile device typically is used to describe portable devices that can connect to the Internet. In the earliest days of the commercialized, advertising soaked internet. People have to use their desktops and laptops to search for companies, products and services. Now mobile devices have such tremendous market penetration where companies should consider how smartphones and tablets have changed the way consumers use the internet.

Mobile devices have drastically affected how people shop online for an example, learning about these changes and taking steps to address them with their own mobile and its presence will help to bring up a business to the next level.

Mobile devices matter a great deal, whether you serve people all across the globe or focused on the local market. In fact, 78% of local business searches were made via mobile devices which transform into purchases, according to a recent report at Kissmetrics http://blog.kissmetrics.com/surprising-mobile-ecommerce/

Humanity is evolving in many ways thanks to mobile devices. But are all the changes for the better?

Topic 6: Identify a figure who is generally known to have played a major role on the internet. Evaluate if his/her contributions are justified or mythologized.

The prominent figure who has played a major role on the internet was Bill Gates, the founder of the worlds largest software business, Microsoft, with Paul Allen, and subsequently became one of the richest men in the world.

The second figure who had also played a major role on the internet was Steve Jobs who is the Co-Founder of Apple Computers with Steve Wozniak. Under Jobs' guidance, the company pioneered a series of revolutionary technologies, including the iPhone and iPad.

The third personality who had played a major role in the internet world is Larry Page who is also known as Internet Entrepreneur and Computer Scientist who had teamed up with his grad school buddy, Sergey Brin to launch the search engine Google in 1998.

Last but not the least is Sergey Brin who have created Google with Larry Page, the two becoming billionaires as Google developed into the world's most popular search engine and a media giant.

There are many other personalities who have played a major role in the internet world today but my admiration towards these four personalites who are the internet luminaries of this millennium drove me to study and explore further on their roles and contributions they have made in today's internet world.

Finalized/Chosen Topic:

Topic 3: How did mobile devices change the way people use the internet? Consider its consumer impact and relate them to a specific creative industry/profession.

In my final analysis, it is my considered view upon pondering on which topic I shall chose but question no.3 seems to be my favourite topic as I feel that it encompasses a lots of contemporary issues that needs to be addressed and to explore further on it although I feel that question no.6 is also interesting and straight forward but I have decided to choose question no.3 which I felt challenging throughout this task. Therefore, from my ongoing  post I will be exploring in depth on my finalized topic.

Internet Cultures - Topic Choices

Internet Cultures - Exploring Topic Choices

We were briefed about our first assignment regarding the research blog on the first day of our class (1st November) by our tutor. So, I started off exploring from the topics which are appended below to accomplish this task which will be easier for me to finalize which topic I shall embark in due course.

Topic choices:

1. Investigate a major controversy that unfolded online. Discuss its relevance to creative
    professionals.

2. Cyberspace is vital for protecting and spreading democracy. Explore this idea and
    question its effectiveness.

3. How did mobile devices change the way people use the internet? Consider its consumer
impact and relate them to a specific creative industry/profession.

4. Compare and contrast how two different communities or social groups use a specific
social media platform. Which of the two groups has more to gain from it and why?

5. Malaysians are so uncreative that they cannot even make 'dank' memes. Argue for or
    against the statement.

6. Identify a figure who is generally known to have played a major role on the internet.
Evaluate if his/her contributions are justified or mythologized.

After a session of mind boggling and soul searching, I have developed my desire to explore on these two topics as enumerated in items 3 and 6 above because it had caught my interest where I verily believe a plethora of issues could be advanced pertaining to the chosen topics for this uphill task.

Based on my knowledge and understanding of topic 3 which emphasizes on:
- How does mobile devices change the way people use the internet
- The impact of mobile devices towards consumers
- Its consumer impact towards a specific creative industry/profession

Topic 6 emphasizes on:
- personality who played a major role on the Internet world
- Whether his immense contributions are justified or mythologized

Therefore, for the next post I will be conducting my research on both these topics before finalizing on which topic essay I shall embark in due course.
