Internet Cultures - Concluding Remarks

Conclusion

Today's mobile devices are multifunctional devices capable of hosting a broad range of applications for both business and consumer use. Smartphones and tablets enable people to use their mobile device to access the Internet for email, instant messaging, text messaging and Web browsing, as well as work documents, contact lists and more. Mobile devices are often seen as an extension to our own PC or laptop, and in some cases newer, more powerful mobile devices can even completely replace PCs. When the device are used together, work done remotely on a mobile device can be synchronized with PCs to reflect changes and new information while away from the computer.

The mobile internet has become one of the most profound enablers of social and economic growth in our time. Today, more than 3 billion people are connected to the internet and a significant majority of consumers have made this connection using a mobile device. Mobile networks serve as the very foundation of today's rapidly evolving digital ecosystem, enabling progress for so many and so many levels.

Nearly ubiquitous mobile technology brings the opportunities of the internet directly to the fingertips of people everywhere. The challenge of building a stronger and more inclusive digital ecosystem is at the core of the work of mobile industry. It has already connected billions, and it won't stop until it has connected the world. Therefore, accessing to the mobile internet is a defining moment in a community's spectrum of cultural, social, economic and political development.

Internet Cultures - Apple Inc.

Mobile Apps: Creative Industry - Apple Inc.

Apple Logo
Apple Campus

Apple is an American multinational technology company headquartered in Cupertino, California, that designs, develops, and sells consumer electronics, computer software, and online services. Its hardware products include the iPhone smartphone, the iPad tablet computer, the Mac personal computer, the iPod portable media player, the Apple Watch smartwatch and the Apple TV digital media player.

Steve Jobs

Apple was founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne in April 1976 to develop and sell personal computers. It was incorporated as Apple Computer, Inc. In January 1977, and was renamed as Apple Inc. In January 2007 to reflect its shifted focus toward consumer electronics.

However, from its origins with advent of Apple's iPhone in 2007, to an industry that could potentially be worth as much as $100 billion by 2015, the mobile apps industry has experienced nearly unprecedented growth. The unique aspects of the industry are discussed in terms of how they have encouraged the widespread popularity of smartphones and other mobile devices and have transformed electronic gaming, internet retailing, and social networking.

Although the mobile apps industry began with Apple's introduction of the iPhone, its phenomenal growth is due to the entry of several competitors into the marketplace, notably Motorola, LG, and Samsung. This competition has given rise to an entirely new product space known as smartphones. Smartphones have far greater functionality than normal mobile phones due to their ability to run mobile apps. These applications confer on smartphones the capabilities to send and receive e-mail, play music, movies and video games, and even communicate remotely with computers from virtually anywhere in the world.

Internet Cultures - How The Internet Has Changed EverydayLife

The Internet And Culture

Internet Culture

In the cultural arena, vast fields of opportunity open up thanks to online tools and mobile devices. The possibilities are multiplied for disseminating a proposal, an item of knowledge, or a work of art. The internet is bringing culture closer to more people, making it more easily and quickly accessible. It is also nurturing the rise of new forms of expression for art and spread of knowledge. Some would say, In fact, that the internet is not just a technology, but a cultural artifact in its own right.

Modern Technology Devices (online tools)

In addition to its impact on culture itself, the Internet is enormously beneficial for innovation, which brings progress in all fields of endeavor. The creation of new goods, services, and ideas, the advance of knowledge and society, and increasing well-being.

The Internet and Social and Political Activism

Social Aspects:

Social Internet

Impacts of Smartphone's has impacted almost all walks of human life. The prominent areas, where impacts of Smartphone are obvious include business, education, health and social life. Mobile technology has drastically changed the cultural norms and behavior of individuals. The impacts are both at the positive side and also at the negative side. At one end Smartphone are enabling people to create their own micro-cultures and engage into activities considered dangerous of society and on the other end Smartphone enabling people to remain connected all the time.

Political Aspects:

Internet Activism

In the political sphere, research has shown that young people who voice their political opinions on the Internet are more inclined to take part in public affairs. The better informed a citizen is, the more likely they will step into the polling booth, and the better they will express their political liberties. The internet has proved to be a decisive communication tool in the latest election campaigns. It is thanks to the Internet that causes in the social, welfare, ideological, and political arenas have been spoken up for and also have won the support of other citizens sharing those values. In many cases, with a real impact on government decision making.

The Internet and The Economy

The Internet Economy

In the spectrum of economy, the internet is one of the key factors driving today's economy. No one can afford to be left behind. Even it is a tough macroeconomic framework, the internet can foster growth, coupled with enhanced productivity and competitiveness. The internet provides opportunities for strengthening the economy.

Internet Cultures - Consumer Impact On Mobile Internet

Consumers Impact On Mobile Internet

Mobile Internet Takes off Anywhere and Anytime

Consumers put a value on the mobile Internet that far exceeds what they pay for it. Competition and innovation in the tech sector are unleashing invention in countless other areas as consumers adopt new behavioral patterns and businesses find ways to improve efficiency, develop new products and services, and expand their market reach. The mobile Internet has created millions of jobs too and the wave has not yet begun to crest. Mobile penetration is increasing, the costs of access and devices are coming down, and more, and more people in both developed and developing economies are using the mobile Internet as their first - and often their only - means of going online.

But the combination of consumer demand and market-based innovation has consistently and successfully driven the mobile Internet's growth, generating enormous economic and social benefits. However, almost everyone on the planet today, regardless of where he or she lives and works, the mobile Internet is already, or soon will be, a life-changing phenomenon. (See Through the Mobile Looking Glass: The Transformative Potential of Mobile Technologies. BCG Focus. April 2013).

For the vast majority of consumers worldwide, the primary computing and online experience will be on mobile devices. That means nearly every service, business, and person who wants to use the internet will be thinking mobile first and PC second. If they think about PCs at all.

Internet Cultures - What Happens To The Web Now That Smartphones And Tablets Run The Show?

Mobile Internet is becoming the Internet

Mobile Technology (Tablet)

People no longer spend hours gazing at a computer screen after work or class, instead , they use their mobile devices to stay online everywhere, all the time. Smartphones and tablets are obviously the hottest technology products right now, but figures about how significant they have become are daunting. Meeker forecasts the worldwide number of smartphone and tablets users should overtake the worldwide number of PC users next year. That means around the world, more people experience of "computing" and Internet Technology will come from mobile devices than via traditional desktop or notebook PCs. If forecasts bear out, this shift will not only continue, but accelerate. Based on data from Morgan Stanley and a few assumptions about device lifetime, Meeker estimates roughly 2.9 billion people around the world will be using smartphones and tablets by 2015.

Press Release - Mobile Internet Users to Top 2 Billion Worldwide in 2016, According to IDC.

According to a Press Release, The International Data Corporation (IDC) estimates that 3.2 billion people, or 44% of the world's population, will have access to the Internet in 2016. Of this number, more than 2 billion will be using mobile devices to do so.

The total number of mobile Internet users is forecast to rise at a pace of 2% annually through 2020 unless significant new methods of accessing the Internet are introduced. Efforts by Google, SpaceX, and Facebook among others to make the Internet available to the remaining 4 billion people via high altitude planes, balloons, and satellites are underway. However, it remains unclear how successful these endeavors will be and when they will be operational at scale.

Mobile Internet - A Serious Disruptive Technology

Mobile internet technology is emerging as fastest growing technology in the world and this technology allows user to access internet through portable and handheld devices. The portable devices includes laptop, tablets, and netbook computers, smartphones, global positioning system (GPS) devices, wireless debit/credit card payment terminals etc.  The power of these portable devices are enormous that allows user to download various applications from a world of application repositories.

Now days, mobile devices are preferred over personal computer for people's daily job completion. Based on quarter 1, 2014, where the total mobile internet users have grown over last 1 year. Tablet and Smartphone users had made up 52% of all users in this category. As of 2013, worldwide mobile phone internet user penetration was 73.4 percent. In 2017, figures suggest that more than 90 percent of internet users will access online content through their mobile phone.

Mobile internet usage has become an integral part of people's daily life. It enables consumers to access online information, interacting in social media, doing business online, getting updates on the go. Statistics shows that mobile phone penetration worldwide is 51% while in Hong Kong, Italy and Ukraine has passed 140%.

In many developing countries where people don't have access to desktop or laptop computer, uses mobile phone for connecting to internet. They are using various services through mobile internet such as daily banking, paying bills, connecting with people. With mobile-oriented services like WhatsApp, WeChat, and Facebook Messenger achieving the top social media ranking spots in some of the world's biggest economies and through these mobile-oriented services, it changes the way people use the internet.

Internet Cultures - Brief Explanation + Introduction on Topic 3

Brief Explanation and Introduction on the Internet:

Topic 3: How did mobile devices change the way people use the internet? Consider its consumer impact and relate them to a specific creative industry/profession.

Before embarking further on the chosen topic, allow me to explain the importance to have a good comprehension and understanding of the chosen topic which is "Internet". What is Internet? According to Google, an internet is the global system of interconnected computer networks that use the internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link devices across the globe.

Before I pursue further in depth with the question at hand, let's go way back in the beginning era of 1990's when the regime of internet usage has changed from the past 25 years ago, when there weren't any smartphones or even internet accessibility and since then a lot of things have changed. Now we could not even remember when was the last time we actually use our smartphones for a whole day with either packet data or WIFI. Mobile smart devices and mobile internet are changing the way we do things and how we connect with other people.

Currently, with the internet everything are much easier than ever in terms of accessibility and networking compared to back then, where so much information can be disseminated from the internet because it provides all sort of information and contemporary issues/news. It has made the internet a very important and recognized tool globally since it has provided the world with so much information and entertainment thus making it easier for the consumers to obtain information. Therefore, internet is one of the most unique and recognized inventions globally because it has eased the work both physically and psychologically.

To recapitulate, the internet coupled with the use mobile apps compared back then and now have completely changed the way the consumers live, work and learn and it has made the world grow in a right direction in terms of cultural, social, political and economical spectrums.

Internet Cultures - Research + Understandings

Topic 3: How did mobile devices change the way people use the internet? Consider its consumer impact and relate them to a specific creative industry/profession.

What is internet? According to Google, an internet is the global system of interconnected computer networks that use the internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link devices worldwide. Whereas the term mobile devices refers to a wide range of consumer electronics. Mobile device typically is used to describe portable devices that can connect to the Internet. In the earliest days of the commercialized, advertising soaked internet. People have to use their desktops and laptops to search for companies, products and services. Now mobile devices have such tremendous market penetration where companies should consider how smartphones and tablets have changed the way consumers use the internet.

Mobile devices have drastically affected how people shop online for an example, learning about these changes and taking steps to address them with their own mobile and its presence will help to bring up a business to the next level.

Mobile devices matter a great deal, whether you serve people all across the globe or focused on the local market. In fact, 78% of local business searches were made via mobile devices which transform into purchases, according to a recent report at Kissmetrics http://blog.kissmetrics.com/surprising-mobile-ecommerce/

Humanity is evolving in many ways thanks to mobile devices. But are all the changes for the better?

Topic 6: Identify a figure who is generally known to have played a major role on the internet. Evaluate if his/her contributions are justified or mythologized.

The prominent figure who has played a major role on the internet was Bill Gates, the founder of the worlds largest software business, Microsoft, with Paul Allen, and subsequently became one of the richest men in the world.

The second figure who had also played a major role on the internet was Steve Jobs who is the Co-Founder of Apple Computers with Steve Wozniak. Under Jobs' guidance, the company pioneered a series of revolutionary technologies, including the iPhone and iPad.

The third personality who had played a major role in the internet world is Larry Page who is also known as Internet Entrepreneur and Computer Scientist who had teamed up with his grad school buddy, Sergey Brin to launch the search engine Google in 1998.

Last but not the least is Sergey Brin who have created Google with Larry Page, the two becoming billionaires as Google developed into the world's most popular search engine and a media giant.

There are many other personalities who have played a major role in the internet world today but my admiration towards these four personalites who are the internet luminaries of this millennium drove me to study and explore further on their roles and contributions they have made in today's internet world.

Finalized/Chosen Topic:

Topic 3: How did mobile devices change the way people use the internet? Consider its consumer impact and relate them to a specific creative industry/profession.

In my final analysis, it is my considered view upon pondering on which topic I shall chose but question no.3 seems to be my favourite topic as I feel that it encompasses a lots of contemporary issues that needs to be addressed and to explore further on it although I feel that question no.6 is also interesting and straight forward but I have decided to choose question no.3 which I felt challenging throughout this task. Therefore, from my ongoing  post I will be exploring in depth on my finalized topic.

Internet Cultures - Topic Choices

Internet Cultures - Exploring Topic Choices

We were briefed about our first assignment regarding the research blog on the first day of our class (1st November) by our tutor. So, I started off exploring from the topics which are appended below to accomplish this task which will be easier for me to finalize which topic I shall embark in due course.

Topic choices:

1. Investigate a major controversy that unfolded online. Discuss its relevance to creative
    professionals.

2. Cyberspace is vital for protecting and spreading democracy. Explore this idea and
    question its effectiveness.

3. How did mobile devices change the way people use the internet? Consider its consumer
impact and relate them to a specific creative industry/profession.

4. Compare and contrast how two different communities or social groups use a specific
social media platform. Which of the two groups has more to gain from it and why?

5. Malaysians are so uncreative that they cannot even make 'dank' memes. Argue for or
    against the statement.

6. Identify a figure who is generally known to have played a major role on the internet.
Evaluate if his/her contributions are justified or mythologized.

After a session of mind boggling and soul searching, I have developed my desire to explore on these two topics as enumerated in items 3 and 6 above because it had caught my interest where I verily believe a plethora of issues could be advanced pertaining to the chosen topics for this uphill task.

Based on my knowledge and understanding of topic 3 which emphasizes on:
- How does mobile devices change the way people use the internet
- The impact of mobile devices towards consumers
- Its consumer impact towards a specific creative industry/profession

Topic 6 emphasizes on:
- personality who played a major role on the Internet world
- Whether his immense contributions are justified or mythologized

Therefore, for the next post I will be conducting my research on both these topics before finalizing on which topic essay I shall embark in due course.

These links refer to the typography and logo as part of design language. The consistency in logos and typography further enhanced Coca-Cola's growth and success in the beverage industry. The significance of Spencerian Script in Coca-Cola logo is the secret to their continued success over the years. The success of Coca-Cola as a brand is centered on its logo. Coca-Cola has been able to make its logo one of the most recognizable logos in the world business. On the other hand, typography draws the consumers attention to a product as well as allows advertising to pass the message they intend to pass clearly. By doing so, no matter what the subject of the advertisement is, customers can see that the advert is about Coca-Cola. These links are relevant to describe these two aspects of design language. For an example, logo and typography in this assignment.

These links refers to the announcement of "One Brand" global marketing strategy by Coca-Cola which has rolled out new packaging that uses the company's recognizable "red disc" emblem with the aim of unifying its product portfolio. Such unification further underscores the company's commitment to choice thus allowing consumers to choose which ever Coca-Cola suites their taste, lifestyle, and diet. The company feels that this unifying strategy will make it easier for consumers to find and choose their favourite variety. For an example, Coca-Cola Original, Coca-Cola Light/Diet/Zero/Life. These links are appropriate to explain the "One Brand" global marketing strategy by Coca-Cola. Therefore, Coca-Cola unifies its brand worldwide with new design language for its growth.

Adventure In Abstraction - Final Outcome. Let's Hope For The Best!!!

Final Outcome!
Final Outcome

My abstract artwork above denotes an Adventure in Abstraction entitled "From being in the state of loneliness to happiness in life" which tells a story that tickles to the figment of my imagination on the magical animated films of my childhood called "Up" where it inspired me to come up with this idea for this task, when I naively thought that because their colors were brighter, their characters outlines more defined and their plots simpler, they were actually more realistic than regular films. Besides that, the artist who has inspired me throughout this task was Ariel Davis, 22 year old illustrator with her friend of dogs.  Her artwork has been recognized by the Society of Illustrators and American Illustration. Her artwork to me is simply magnificent and mind blowing throughout the process of finishing this task.

Disney Pixars "UP"

Furthermore, for those of you guys out there have not watched, seen or known about this film, let me explain briefly regarding the summary of this film "Up" so that you guys will get a clearer picture about it and what's my artwork is all about.  The summary behind the film "Up" is where it begins with a romance as sweet and lovely as any I can recall in feature animation. Two children named Carl and Ellie meet and discover where they share the same dream of someday being explorers. In newsreels, they see the exploits of a daring adventurer named Charles Mentz, who uses his gigantic airship to explore a lost world on a plateau in Venezuela and then bring back the bones of fantastic creatures previously unknown to man.  When his discoveries are accused of being faked, he flies off enraged to South America again, vowing to bring back living creatures to prove his claims. Nothing is heard from him for years. Ellie and Carl grow up, have a courtship, marry, bought a ramshackle house and turn it into their dream home, are happy together and grow old. The lovebirds save their loose change in a gallon jug intended to finance their trip to the legendary Paradise Falls, but real life gets in the way such as flat tires, home repairs, and medical bills.  Then they make a heart breaking discovery.  This interlude is poetic and touching indeed.

The focus of this abstract art that I chose to do entitled "From being in the state of loneliness to happiness in life" was on Carl's life after Ellie's death. He becomes a recluse, lonely, holds out against the world, keeps his home as a memorial, talks to the absent Ellie. One day he decides to pack up and fly-away literally. Having worked all his life as a balloon man, he has the equipment on hand to suspend the house from countless helium-filled balloons and fulfill his dream of seeking Paradise Falls. Furthermore, what he wasn't counting on was an inadvertent stowaway, Russell, a dutiful Wilderness Explorer Scout, who looks Asian American. He'd been hoping Carl would help him win a badge for helping old people. Eventually, the two bond on their way to Paradise Falls, and the irascible Carl discovers both the son he never had and his own youthful self by fulfilling the adventure he and Ellie didn't manage. Ever since, Russell came into Carl's life, that is where Carl finds his happiness after being so lonely all this while due to Ellie's death.

Besides that, it can be clearly seen from my abstract artwork, the mood tends to be generally happy which describes the balloons bursting out colors, but when it drops into sadness it describes the dark, sad, deflated balloon depicting loneliness.  Moreover, the color that I have applied on the different sizes of circles which denotes as the "balloons" is very important in this artwork, and it can be clearly seen the variations in the sizes and the colors of the "balloons" itself conveying the message and changes in the mood when there is happiness, and when there is loneliness/sadness the color becomes muted. Nevertheless, Ellie is the color in Carl's life, that is why I have applied bright and colorful range of colors into this artwork to show Ellie's love to Carl no matter what are the circumstances.  As Ellie has quoted specially to Carl, "Thanks for the adventure and now go have a new one".

Ellie quoted specially to Carl

One of the ways in which color is introduced through balloons, an object that features frequently in the "Married Life" sequence or it can also be a "Sad Life".  At the level of "explicit meaning" they are an important part of the film story line but they also carry a symbolic significance in terms of Carl and Ellie's relationship. A balloon has bonded them, balloons were part of their livelihood and their personal message to one another. They were present at Ellie's funeral. Carl takes home a blue balloon, the same color as when they first met as children, and the same color that he gave to her in the hospital. It is clearly cyclical and symbolizes their love. Love, that is the overarching theme in this entire story. This is the reason why I chose to do my abstract art on balloons so that it coincides with my chosen image or artwork that I was highly inspired especially from this film which has touched my heart.

In my concluding note, I developed my desire and interest in writing about this abstract artwork entitled "From being in the state of loneliness to happiness in life". I was fascinated with the life of Carl and Ellie from the Animated Disney Pixars "Up" and this has laid down the impetus for me to come up with the idea of presenting this "Adventure in Abstraction" artwork which I thought from the beginning it was quite impossible and an arduous task but my constant determination and persistence drove me to complete this master piece of artwork entitled "From being in the state of loneliness to happiness in life" .

This link refers to the literature review and the theoretical framework on brand image. In reference to Coca-Cola Company, it has invested time and money to have its own image which was well recognized since the World War II as it has been household name among consumers in the world. It is submitted that an image is very important to a company, without it, businesses would collapse. Coca-Cola owes its success to its well-known image since 1885 till to date. The consistency in the image and consumers preference to its Coca-Cola beverages further strengthened its monopoly in the beverage industry. Therefore, image is an important aspect of the design language for its sustenance and growth in the market place. Thus, this link is the most suitable to describe the brand image aspect of the design language.

Adventure in Abstraction - Development Work (Existing Image, Media, Ideas & Sketches)

The reason why I chose to do on "happiness" where I will be emphasizing on balloons for my abstract art is because it denotes "happiness". Furthermore, balloons show "happiness" while deflated balloons show "loneliness".  In order for me to come up with an outstanding and mind  blowing abstract art what I will have to do is to combine both happiness and loneliness elements/scenes and make it into one abstract art. Basically, my artwork will show two different scenes which consist of "happiness" and "loneliness" in that one abstract piece of work. I will be playing around with the colors and moods as well. The working method for this task free rein in media it could be done digitally, collage, painting, etc to create an abstract piece. My chosen media will be watercolor where I will be painting my abstract masterpiece using poster colors. I really hope this task will turn out to be a good abstract artwork. The following image below will be the existing image that I chose and was inspired by:-

Adventure in Abstraction - Brief Explanation

Hello! In my previous blog, I have posted about Time-Based Media Project Assignment.  Now, I wish to explore on my new project assignment which is called "Adventure In Abstraction". The theme that I chose for this task is "From Being in the State of Loneliness to Happiness In Life" where I have to relate this theme to my image reference that has inspired me to carry out this abstract master piece of art.

Basically, my abstract artwork is about "From Being in the state of  Loneliness to Happiness in Life" where as we can see some people out there are lonely. The reasons being in the state of being "lonely" could be due to family, friends and other problems.  They face all kind of problems day by day, time to time until they give up and ended up being so depressed and lonely at last. There is always a solution to the problems that we are facing no matter what are the circumstances. All we have to do is to ask for some advice from either family, relatives or even best friends. I bet, they will have a better solution and advice to solve our problems. Besides that, always remember that you are not alone, I believe that someone somewhere that looks up to you and loves you no matter what are the circumstances. In order for me to come up with an outstanding and mind blowing abstract art, what I have to do is to create an abstract piece from the existing image that I am inspired by and the goal is to recreate ideas without waste, and to distill meaning to the most basic of methods while giving emphasis on emotions. The goal of this task is not to recreate the artwork, but to select elements to highlight and to simplify the message that is being delivered via the chosen piece, or to infuse a meaning of our own. So, let's see how my progression goes for this task. :)
